About

stepbystepcalculator.com is a free set of online calculators built around one idea: you should be able to see, and go back to, every step of your working.

Why we built it

Most of the sums people do online are short chains: a bill minus a discount, plus a tip, split a few ways. On an ordinary calculator, one mistake halfway through means clearing and starting again, and the working disappears as soon as you have the answer.

We wanted a calculator that keeps the working. Every finished calculation is saved as a numbered step, and any step can be picked up again with a tap. It is a small change, but it makes everyday maths easier to check and easier to fix.

What “step by step” means here

Today it means a calculation history you can move back through. As we add more calculators, it will also mean showing the working: explaining how each answer was reached, not just what it is.

What we promise

  • Free. No subscription, no premium tier and no trial.
  • No sign-up. No account, no email address, no personal details.
  • Your data stays with you. Your history is stored in your own browser, not on our servers.
  • Plain answers. Clear results, honest explanations and no jargon where plain words will do.

What’s next

The basic calculator is the first of several. Each new calculator will get its own page and keep the same step history. If there is one you would like to see, let us know.

Who runs it

Rob Walker

stepbystepcalculator.com is run by Rob Walker, a webmaster who manages many websites. That work comes with a steady stream of everyday sums, and an ordinary calculator throws the working away the moment one figure changes. He built stepbystepcalculator.com so every step stays on screen and any of them can be picked up again. Rob runs the site as an individual and writes its blog. The calculator is free and needs no account.
