Privacy policy

Last updated 6 November 2026. The short version: we don’t collect personal information, and your calculation history never leaves your browser.

Who we are

This policy covers the website stepbystepcalculator.com, which is run by Rob Walker as an individual (“we”, “us”, “our”). We handle personal information in line with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). You can contact us about privacy at rob@mawing.com.

What we collect

We have designed the site so we don’t need any personal information from you.

  • There are no accounts, logins or sign-up forms.
  • We don’t ask for your name, email address, phone number or location.
  • We don’t use analytics, tracking pixels, advertising cookies or third-party scripts.
  • You can use every feature anonymously (APP 2).

Your calculation history

The steps you see in “Your steps” are saved in your browser’s local storage, on your own device. They are not sent to us and we cannot see them. They stay there until you press Clear history or clear your browser’s data for this site. Anyone else who uses the same browser on the same device may be able to see them.

The calculator’s memory (the number you store with M+ and M−) and your choice about copying answers are kept the same way, in local storage on your device, and we cannot see them either.

Local storage is a browser feature, not a cookie, and the site doesn’t read or write any cookies.

Your clipboard

When you press equals, the calculator copies the answer to your clipboard using your browser’s standard copy feature, so you can paste it elsewhere. This happens entirely on your device: the number is not sent to us or anyone else. The site only writes to your clipboard and never reads what is on it. You can turn copying off with the switch under the keypad.

Technical information

Like almost every website, the servers that deliver these pages may automatically record standard technical information when your browser requests a page, such as your IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time. This is used only to keep the site running and secure, it is not combined with other information to identify you, and it is deleted on a routine schedule.

Pages reach you through Cloudflare, a content delivery network that sits between your browser and our server. Cloudflare processes this technical information, including your IP address, to deliver the site and protect it from abuse, and may do so on servers outside Australia (APP 8).

When you email us

The only personal information we handle is what you choose to send us by email to rob@mawing.com, usually your email address, your name if you include it, and the content of your message. We use it only to reply to you and to improve the site (APP 6). We don’t sell it, rent it or add you to a mailing list.

Our email is handled by a third-party email provider, which may store messages on servers outside Australia (APP 8). We take reasonable steps to make sure any provider we use protects your information consistently with the APPs. Delete requests are welcome: ask us and we will remove your emails, unless we are required by law to keep them.

Advertising

We don’t show advertising on the site at the moment. If we introduce advertising in future (for example, Google AdSense), we will update this policy before any ads appear. That update will explain which third-party vendors are involved, how they use cookies or similar technologies, and how you can opt out. Where the law requires it, we will ask for your consent first.

Keeping information secure

We take reasonable steps to protect any personal information we hold from misuse, interference, loss and unauthorised access (APP 11). The site is designed to hold as little as possible in the first place.

Access and correction

You can ask for a copy of any personal information we hold about you, or ask us to correct it (APPs 12 and 13). Email us and we will respond within 30 days. There is no charge.

Children

The calculator is suitable for all ages. Because we don’t collect personal information through the site, we don’t knowingly collect information from children. If a child has emailed us and a parent or guardian would like the message deleted, contact us.

Complaints

If you have a concern about how we have handled your personal information, please email us first so we can try to resolve it. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au or on 1300 363 992.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page. Significant changes, such as introducing advertising, will be made before they take effect. See also our terms of use.
