Frequently asked questions
Everything you might want to know about the calculator, your history and your privacy.
Is stepbystepcalculator.com really free?
Yes. There is nothing to buy, no premium tier and no trial. You can use every feature without signing up.
Do I need an account or an email address?
No. There are no accounts and we never ask for your email, name or any other personal information.
Where is my calculation history stored?
Only in your own browser, using its local storage. It is never sent to us or to anyone else. Clearing your history, clearing your browser data or using a private window removes it.
How do I go back to an earlier step?
Tap or click any entry in the “Your steps” panel. Its result goes back into the display, the step is highlighted, and the next key you press carries on from that number. Your other steps stay in the list.
Why does 2 + 3 × 4 give 14?
The calculator follows standard operator precedence: multiplication and division are worked out before addition and subtraction. 3 × 4 = 12 comes first, then 2 is added. Our blog post on operator precedence goes into more detail.
Can I use my keyboard?
Yes. Type digits and the decimal point, use + − * / for the operators (x also works for multiply), Enter or = to calculate, % for percent, r for square root and n to change sign. Backspace deletes the last digit, Delete clears the number you are typing, and Escape clears the whole sum.
How does the % key work?
Like a handheld calculator. After + or −, it works out that percentage of the total so far, so 200 + 10% = 220 and 80 − 25% = 60. After × or ÷ it divides by 100 first, so 200 × 10% = 20. On its own, 10% is 0.1.
What do MC, MR, M+ and M− do?
They keep one stored number for a running total. M+ adds the number in the display to memory, M− subtracts it, MR puts the stored number into your sum, and MC clears it. A small M in the display shows when memory isn’t zero. Memory is kept in your own browser, like your history, so it is still there after a reload and is never sent to us.
Why is my answer copied?
So you can paste it straight into a spreadsheet, email or form. Each time you press =, the answer is copied to your clipboard and the display shows a short confirmation. This happens on your own device: the site only writes to your clipboard, never reads it, and nothing is sent anywhere. To stop it, turn off the switch under the keypad; the setting is remembered.
What happens if I divide by zero?
The display shows “Error” because the answer isn’t a number. Press any digit or AC to start again. Failed calculations are not added to your history.
How accurate are the results?
Results are rounded to 12 significant digits, which hides the tiny rounding noise computers add to some decimals (so 0.1 + 0.2 shows 0.3). That is plenty for everyday sums. For tax, legal or financial decisions, check important figures with a qualified professional.
Will there be other calculators?
Yes. The basic calculator is the first. More types, each with its own page, will follow and will keep the same step-by-step history.
